Tiller vs SIMPL

Bottom line: Tiller is $99 a year and feeds your bank data into your own Google Sheet or Excel workbook. SIMPL is $199 once and is a finished app, not a spreadsheet. Spreadsheet people should stay on Tiller.

Our read

It depends on the job

Tiller is for people who want their own spreadsheet with bank data flowing into it. If you love building sheets, stay. If you want a finished budget app you pay for once, SIMPL is about two years of Tiller.

Can it pay for itself?

SIMPL is $199 once, about $17 a month over its first year. Its Drain Guard reads your expenses (from a linked bank, an imported statement, or ones you type in), finds the charges that repeat, and adds them up by the month. Keep or Cut then walks you through them one at a time. Cancel $17 a month of charges you'd forgotten about and SIMPL has paid for itself inside the first year, before you count the Tiller bill you'd stop paying.

It depends on what you find and what you cancel, so we don't promise a number.

What Tiller is

Spreadsheet enthusiasts who would rather customize their own spreadsheets than learn a new budgeting app. finder.com

Price: $99 a year, after a 30-day free trial and then 30 more days backed by a full refund. No monthly plan. tiller.com

Where it runs: Works inside Google Sheets or Excel (Excel needs Microsoft 365 or Excel Online), plus the web-based Tiller Console. No native phone app.

Where Tiller is strong

  • Your spreadsheets live in your own Google Drive. Tiller says it does not own or store any of your spreadsheets in its database. help.tiller.com
  • Bank transactions are filled into Google Sheets or Excel automatically and 'Updated Each Day'. tiller.com
  • With 2026's Direct Fills, new transactions land in the Google Sheet as soon as linked accounts refresh, with no button to press. tiller.com
  • Finder lists flexible budgeting templates and auto-categorized transactions as pros, and says Tiller connects to 21,000 institutions through Yodlee. finder.com

What reviewers say it lacks

  • There is no native mobile app, and some customers report a learning curve if they aren't comfortable with spreadsheets. finder.com
  • Finder rates the Excel version as limited. Tiller confirms that Direct Fills, AI Suggest and Data Cleanup work only in Google Sheets for now. tiller.com
  • It doesn't connect with non-US banks. finder.com
  • It has no investment tracking, it is subscription only, and setup takes significant work at the start. machow2.com

What SIMPL is

SIMPL is a budgeting and money app you buy once for $199. It is the same money engine as the Vault inside Nexa, sold on its own.

What it does

  • A zero-based budget: give every dollar a job on payday, with envelopes for the irregular costs.
  • Savings goals, each with its own progress, and a debt payoff plan.
  • A subscription tracker (Drain Guard) that finds charges repeating every month and lets you Keep or Cut each one.
  • Receipt capture with the phone camera; receipts become expenses.
  • Profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow, for anyone who also earns freelance or side income.
  • Works offline, with a Spanish interface.

What it doesn't

  • No investment tracking. If watching a brokerage or retirement portfolio is the job, SIMPL is the wrong tool.
  • Without Cloud Sync it lives on one device. Cloud Sync is optional at $4.99 a month (the first three months are included).
  • No hosted support desk: it is software you own and run yourself.

Who SIMPL suits better
