Quicken vs SIMPL
Bottom line: Quicken Simplifi is $3.99 a month and Quicken Classic Deluxe $6.99 a month, both billed yearly as first-year offers that renew at then-current rates. SIMPL is $199 once. Investors should stay on Classic; for budgeting alone, SIMPL ends the yearly renewal.
It depends on the job
Quicken Classic is the deep desktop option, with investment tools SIMPL doesn't have. Simplifi is cheap at today's first-year price ($47.88 a year), so SIMPL only beats it on cost after about four years. SIMPL's case is a budget you own outright, with no renewal at 'then-current rates'.
Can it pay for itself?
SIMPL is $199 once, about $17 a month over its first year. Its Drain Guard reads your expenses (from a linked bank, an imported statement, or ones you type in), finds the charges that repeat, and adds them up by the month. Keep or Cut then walks you through them one at a time. Cancel $17 a month of charges you'd forgotten about and SIMPL has paid for itself inside the first year, before you count the Quicken bill you'd stop paying.
It depends on what you find and what you cancel, so we don't promise a number.

- Classic runs as 'a secure desktop experience where your data stays local'. quicken.com
- Simplifi has a spending plan that adjusts as you spend, projected cash flow with what-if scenarios, investment tracking with cost basis, and sharing with one other person such as a partner or advisor. quicken.com
- Engadget's top budgeting pick is Simplifi, praised as an 'easy-to-use app with a gentle learning curve' that is cheaper than competitors and includes a refund tracker. engadget.com
What reviewers say it lacks
- Simplifi has no free trial, no Apple or Google sign-in, and no Zillow integration, so real estate must be added by hand. engadget.com
- Classic for Mac still lacks many Windows features, including the Lifetime Planner and some investment, business and rental tools, and it has no crypto tracking. machow2.com
- Classic for Windows 'looks dated and more complex' and 'can slow down with very large files'. Cloud sync between desktop and mobile 'is still not perfect on either platform'. machow2.com
What SIMPL is
SIMPL is a budgeting and money app you buy once for $199. It is the same money engine as the Vault inside Nexa, sold on its own.
What it does
- A zero-based budget: give every dollar a job on payday, with envelopes for the irregular costs.
- Savings goals, each with its own progress, and a debt payoff plan.
- A subscription tracker (Drain Guard) that finds charges repeating every month and lets you Keep or Cut each one.
- Receipt capture with the phone camera; receipts become expenses.
- Profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow, for anyone who also earns freelance or side income.
- Works offline, with a Spanish interface.
What it doesn't
- No investment tracking. If watching a brokerage or retirement portfolio is the job, SIMPL is the wrong tool.
- Without Cloud Sync it lives on one device. Cloud Sync is optional at $4.99 a month (the first three months are included).
- No hosted support desk: it is software you own and run yourself.
