Mint vs SIMPL

Bottom line: Mint shut down on March 23, 2024, and its users were moved to Credit Karma, which has no budgets or subscription management. SIMPL is a $199 one-time budgeting app that imports the Mint transactions CSV.

Our read

Mint is gone

Mint is gone, and Credit Karma, where Intuit sent its users, is not a budgeting app. If you saved your Mint transactions CSV before the shutdown, SIMPL can import it.

Can it pay for itself?

SIMPL is $199 once, about $17 a month over its first year. Its Drain Guard reads your expenses (from a linked bank, an imported statement, or ones you type in), finds the charges that repeat, and adds them up by the month. Keep or Cut then walks you through them one at a time. Cancel $17 a month of charges you'd forgotten about and SIMPL has paid for itself inside the first year.

It depends on what you find and what you cancel, so we don't promise a number.

What Mint is

Moot: Mint no longer exists. Intuit's official path for Mint users is Credit Karma, which Engadget's reviewer tested and found 'isn't an exact replacement for Mint'. engadget.com

What Credit Karma kept

What Credit Karma doesn't do

What SIMPL is

SIMPL is a budgeting and money app you buy once for $199. It is the same money engine as the Vault inside Nexa, sold on its own.

What it does

  • A zero-based budget: give every dollar a job on payday, with envelopes for the irregular costs.
  • Savings goals, each with its own progress, and a debt payoff plan.
  • A subscription tracker (Drain Guard) that finds charges repeating every month and lets you Keep or Cut each one.
  • Receipt capture with the phone camera; receipts become expenses.
  • Profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow, for anyone who also earns freelance or side income.
  • Works offline, with a Spanish interface.

What it doesn't

  • No investment tracking. If watching a brokerage or retirement portfolio is the job, SIMPL is the wrong tool.
  • Without Cloud Sync it lives on one device. Cloud Sync is optional at $4.99 a month (the first three months are included).
  • No hosted support desk: it is software you own and run yourself.

Who should stay on Mint

Nobody can stay: Mint has been gone since March 23, 2024. Former users either went to Credit Karma, which has no Mint-style budgets, or moved to another app. wallethub.com

Who SIMPL suits better

You liked Mint for its budgets and want them back without a monthly bill.
